YouTube "hack" reveals HD / surround sound testing
It's a feature we've been clamoring for as long as we can remember -- high-def on YouTube -- and it's about to happen. Thanks to a few curious YouTube browsers, a simple URL hack revealed that the online video site already has the ability to host and play back 720p clips, and better still, some users are reporting that surround sound is also in the works. Wired is claiming that YouTube has confirmed that this discovery is part of the site's efforts to test out different video formats, and with rivals like Viddyou already up to 1080p, it's about flippin' time. We can't say for sure when YouTube HD will roll out in official form, but you should definitely hit the read link and check the embedded vids; the top one is 720p, the bottom is the standard pixel-fest. We dare you to not be amazed at the difference.

you dare us to not be amazed? WTF? no one here has seen 720p videos or watched youtube vids?? or jus watches different quality vids in general?? yeah it's alot better, but if anyone used stage6, this was pretty standard for that site.

The point is that YouTube is bringing HD to the masses and making it easy. Has every body on Engadget HD seen HD? I would say they probably have. However, there is still millions of people out there that haven't, but they do use YouTube. The most popular or anything rarely has the newest technology first. Chances are though when this if finally launched, the "HD" video's will be of a decently higher caliber, as HD cameras are still a bit pricey.

YouTube is probably the single most popular video sharing website on the planet. The fact it's going HD is definitely newsworthy.
What'll be even more interesting to see is if MGM supports HD YouTube?

I can only imagine what their bandwidth consumed will be with HD now.

One thing that kept me off youtube was the crappy quality of the videos. Both audio and video. So once this goes through maybe ill start using it.
