Philips LCDs better than Kuro plasmas...at least according to Philips
Philips marketing exec Danny Tack is pulling no punches at IFA, proclaiming the company's new LCDs are better than the vaunted Pioneer Kuro plasmas. Measuring -- by his own estimation -- on par with the 9th-gen Pioneer plasmas on black levels, and better brightness, natural motion and motion sharpness, he's ready to call LED-backlit LCDs and OLED HDTVs the long term winners, with plasma relegated to only the biggest screens. The read link points to his comments in full, but most importantly, do you have a side, or are you waiting to get eyes-on the new Essence and FlatTV models first?

Come on! What else would he say. At the very least they'll get boosted sales just from the sound bite alone vis-a-vis the Kuro comparison.
Furthermore, since when has Philips been on the premium end of ANYTHING.
TrentD @ Sep 1st 2008 5:00PM
Pioneer > Philips
Plasma > LCD
KURO > LED backlit LCD.

$ Plasma > $ LCD

It does cost money to purchase quality.
But you're a bit off - generally plasmas cost less than LCDs. Kuro Pioneers cost more, but they're a premium product.

Umm...no. Compare any manufacturer that makes similarly sized LCDs and plasmas...their LCDs are always way more expensive. Compare a 42" samsung plasma to their 40" LCD (of similar quality), 52" LCD to 50" plasma...shiet....even their 57" LCD was a couple grand more than their 63" plasma last year, and it looked like shit compared to the plasma

ROTFLMAO!!! Philips better than Pioneer ROTFLMAO!!!
derrick @ Sep 1st 2008 5:27PM
Philips will never get its praise because here in the states most of us have never seen their top tier products. I'm not claiming he's correct but the do sell exceptional products in Europe, and continually win design awards. But as long as there isn't any exposure in the US we will never know. Even back with crt they had set that was on par with the xbr but as long we Amercans remain sheep and follow the crowd we will never know. In some place that I won't mention if you say a bad word against Kuro be prepared to be lynched. my 2 cents
Ken @ Sep 2nd 2008 1:30AM
Last year (or two), we had their 42" flagship LCD and 50" flagship plasma in our store. They were very nice. Made in Belgium, great build quality, good picture, and terrible ergonomics. That said, they were pretty cool.

Kuro == marketing.
Engadget (I believe it was) ran a story showing better contrast (including black levels) on Sony's LCDs than the Kuros. They were baffled that they had fallen for a marketing line all this time.
In order to clear the cognitive dissonance, they soon forgot about this and went right back to spouting the same market line the Kuros folks had been feeding them.
TrentD @ Sep 1st 2008 6:46PM
Feel free to provide a link - and plasma has more than contrast ratio going for it - color fidelity, color gamut, and more are all superior to LCD.

There you go. I see your flat-out denial is right on track. Keep on with the kool-aid there, don't let actual info get in the way of believing every bit of marketing Pioneer throws at you.
TrentD @ Sep 1st 2008 9:51PM
Gizmodo (not Engadget) even pointed out that it was a SONY-RUN demo, not a fair comparison, since they saw opposite results in a similar Pioneer test years ago.
I can make a Pioneer look worse than a Vizio, given thirty seconds with the remote.

TrentD:
Yes, that's COMPLETELY the point.
Sonys displays look better when Sony is showing them off.
Kuros look better when Pioneer is showing them off.
When faced with this info, what do you conclude? They're both making up marketing stories to sell their products. BOTH OF THEM. Which is what I said. Kuros are marketing.
Instead, many people like you believe Pioneer's hype, point out that Sony is clearly cheating and don't even bother to stop to think if Pioneer is cheating. Well, they are.

Where did my other post go?
Yes, I realize the link was to gizmodo (I did say "I think" before).
When Sony shows them, the Sony looks better.
When Pioneer shows them, the Pioneer looks better.
They are both playing marketing tricks. Pioneer are marketing wizards with the Kuros.
Why do people like you assume that only other companies play marketing tricks? The creation of the legend of the Kuro (as below, with the person saying a Kuro can never be beat) is entirely a function of marketing. And you're eating right out of their hands.
Pioneer rigs their demos to make the Kuros look better than they are, just like Sony does with their LCDs.

I own a 60" Pioneer Kuro PDP-6010FD. I paid around $4,000 for it in late February. I have literally put every type of TV known to man, including my Optoma HD81 projector, next to it.
Including LCD's from Sony, Samsung and LG. It is truly a wonderful television and its blacks are absolutely stunning.
IF the Yet-to-be-released XBR8 is better, GREAT! But it maxes out at 55".
Name 1 television 60" or larger that can show or best the Pioneer Kuro for a reasonable price.
Go ahead, Mr. I'm so smart not to believe marketing claims. Name one. Maybe I'll pick one up and put it next to my Pioneer and I will calibrate both of them and take pictures side to side.

that is the funniest BS Marketing crap i have ever heard!!!
No one will ever beat the Kuros. Its hilarious Philips of all people bragging about their tvs.. funny, pathetic, sad. It just leaves me speachless.. I cant wait to see their products at Cedia and laugh at them
gr689 @ Sep 2nd 2008 3:54AM
wrong. if kuros will never be beat then why not give up on new technology. That statement is about as funny as Phillips'
Fargus @ Sep 1st 2008 8:09PM
If Phillips is wanting to be taken seriously, this is the wrong approach.
daki @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:02AM
I have two brothers one of the owns a top of the line sony (X-series) and the other one a Kuro. And I can honestly say there just is no comparison, the Kuro is clearly the better one by far. At least when it comes to movie watching, in gaming they are more evenly matched).
Dave @ Sep 2nd 2008 10:19AM
Every vendor fudges the contrast numbers, either with questionable measurements or funky 'active' contrast management. What is needed is an objective test that all vendors use.
But it's all moot as nothing completes with plasma viewing angles (except, perhaps a CRT). If more than a few people are crowding around to watch a show, plasma wins.

At this moment in time and for the near future Plasma is the best with Pioneer Kuro topping the top.
OLED? It is promising as a replacement for Plasma, when it grows up. Right now its too expensive and not large enough.
LED-Backlit LCD: Could compete with Plasma and maybe even surpass it. Oh but the price.... well - you'd never beat Plasma for price - its a mature tech and the lower LCD gets the lower plasma gets. Oh and right, how about a 60"+ LCD? Oh yeah, not going to happen.
So Plasma > LCD, LED-Backlit LCD, OLED.
For people who want 60"+ TV's Plasma is our only viable option.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:36PM
There are several >60" LCDs. Sharp sells 62". They have done so for 3 years.
Jake Geertsen @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:12PM
LCD has NEVER EVER been something called a picture. It´s fake, no deepts, they are fagrile, Plasma runs for 100.000 hours, LCD 60.000 (eco anybody??)! Plasma wins in every aspect. And the crappy net medias wrting about plasma is dead and LCD rules, because there is alot of very stupid humans around buying from discount stores and from sales personal that dont not shit!. Watching a LCD for 4 hours your head is tired of trying to find focus, specially from 37" and above ! Panasonic rules. Pioneer is a small but respected company. Panasonic wins . why? because the build the Plasma factories , beating everybody, (we thank Panasonic (matsushita) or else we only had crappy korean sumsang and LG (you know the companyes right beside hyndai, kia, and Daewoo - and if you dont know anything about technologi they sucks !). Japan RULES !
why not the LS2LS7? @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:34PM
What are you talking about? I and several of my friends have 52" LCDs. There is no headache from trying to watch them.
Jake Geertsen @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:12PM
Oh and by the way. Philips is a dutch company who 10 years ago said that they will focus on Medical products. It is the only company having trouble selling their screens, loosing money in 2008 on their screen division . and the don´t make any of them by them self. It is a LG (6 years ago also called Goldstar - the cheapest crap you cound buy) !!!!!!!!
HDMan @ Sep 3rd 2008 6:54PM
LOL... all these people who actually think Phillips stands a chance against Pioneers Kuro line are either stupid or crazy. There is a reason why practicaly every review of any model Kuro brags about the picture quality! They are the BEST. Period. End.
