Yes, the HQV chip is king! The Denon 5308 has the top of the line has the Realta HQV chip. That is their top of the line chip. The Reon HQV, while excellent, is not quite up to snuff. If i'm not mistaken, the onkyo 905 and 875 come with the Reon version. Both good choices. If you want the best, you need to consider the Denon with the Realta chip.
The Realta and the Renon use the same programing and logic, the Realta only adds programing capabilities for custom configuration in high end installs, that's why you only see it in very high end receivers and pre/pro's. I have the Renon in my samsung bd-up5000 and it does a very nice job upscaling. I think it would do a very nice job upscaling any source in a receiver.
