You can't record protected content over HDMI since it's HDCP all over it. You'd be able to capture unencrypted content (like your local stations), but if that's all you want, get the HDHomeRun instead.
The only way to get digital content to a PC is via the "analog hole". Hence the component inputs.
I just hooked mine up and now I can record all my HD programming on my PC's 640 GB hard drive (as opposed to the miniscuel 160GB drive in comcast's box). I aslo can stream my recordings anywhere in my house!!
