Pioneer says goodbye to plasma manufacturing
We wondered why its so hard to find one of Pioneer's award winning Kuro plasmas on shelves these days, and here is the answer. The Nikkei is reporting that Pioneer plans to stop producing plasma panels altogether, and only put together HDTVs with panels purchased from other sources. Panasonic and Hitachi remain as the only Japanese plasma manufacturers, Pioneer already has a deal with the former to purchase plasmas for its 42-inch model, and will expand that agreement according to The Nikkei. Honestly, this wouldn't be a big deal for most companies, as we've seen with the Sony/Sharp/Samsung triangle in LCD manufacturing, but since Pioneer is the only manufacturer promising the blackest black levels this side of carbon nanotubes, we're freaking out a bit. Here's hoping Pioneer slides over the blueprints to the infinite contrast concept (and that sexy 9mm model) and keeps the party going.

This is terrible news... :(
So long Infinite Contrast Kuro.

They were the only single glass pane plasma makers that could be considered good. Hitachi and Panny viewers may as well be looking at a mirror when it comes to glare.

Every other site is reporting this as saying that this only applies to their 42" sets. Might wanna check your facts guys

The 42-inch was an earlier announcement. This is different, you can read it directly from The Nikkei or CNBC at the links provided, or follow the link above to see our coverage of the earlier announcement about 42-inch manufacturing.

if they are in fact wrong, they will just delete the post. they have done that before.
do you have a link to the article?
Matt @ Mar 3rd 2008 7:35PM

The writing on this website has gotten kind of sloppy lately

This is the worst news ever. This is horrible. There goes my hopes and dreams of me trying to get one for myself, so much for saving up. So long to the best TV ever made.
ProfWho @ Mar 3rd 2008 8:17PM
This is awful. I think I am really depressed now. My dream has been to own one of the new Kuro's when they come out.
mcrexx @ Mar 3rd 2008 8:46PM
Great, it looks like I'm going to have to settle on an LCD at this rate. I can't wait to add artificial enhancements to my picture just so I can stop seeing 3 footballs! Negative 1 response time available yet?
Let's hope Panasonic doesn't ditch Plasma anytime soon.
JermTool @ Mar 6th 2008 10:58AM
Hahaha yeah LCD's bright, simulated colors are so amazing! I love seeing motion blur when I watch sports, it adds for dramatic effect. 120hz processing doesn't over compensate at all, seriously, it's the best thing since sliced bread. It's funny how the best TV ever made is 5th in sales, shows you how ignorant people are when it comes to shopping for TVs... spend $2,500 on a crap LCD because it's 1080p, but not spend $2,500 on a Pioneer plasma which has the highest contrast, deepest blacks, ASIC processing, 4 HDMI 1.3 inputs, etc., because it's 720p. I hope Panasonic's new panels match the quality of Pioneer's!
haevolution @ Mar 3rd 2008 9:45PM
This is really bad news. I have an LCD now but was aspiring to get a 1080p Pio. This is a sad day indeed.
poppa77300 @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:33PM
how can this be, the best tv ever, damn best buy and wal-mart for whoring out tv's making it non-profitable to sell a good tv, as long as we keep believing what the media feeds us we will all have to live with less choice. Screw the liberal media and them trying to brainwash us!!!!!!!!!!!
Sean @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:56PM
to expensive. good night plasma.
MrSatyre @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:24PM
Everyone calm down. This is a false story. Pioneer is getting out of the 42" PDP display biz, not PDP entirely. There was a story in the Japanese press about how Pioneer was shutting down it's 42" panel factory which it had purchased from NEC several years ago, and somehow that has been completely blown out of proportion. Pioneer is NOT getting out of the PDP biz.
Richard Lawler @ Mar 3rd 2008 11:30PM
Obviously you haven't actually read the story.
MrSatyre @ Mar 4th 2008 12:12AM
Richard, I'm glad you have an opinion, but please verify the facts with the brands involved before making assumptions. The companies mentioned happen to say otherwise.
Richard Lawler @ Mar 4th 2008 1:41AM
You have your facts and your opinion confused. Please read the article and come back.
TG @ Mar 4th 2008 10:34AM
So this is an expansion of the news that they were outsourcing 42" panels, and now they are discontinuing the 50+ class production lines as well? Previously reports stated Pioneer was only getting out of the 42" class because the competition is too tight there.
andy @ Mar 4th 2008 11:44AM
Does it really matter as long as they license everything to panasonic?
It could be good as it might be cheaper with one facility making them all (panny)
Craig Korinko @ Mar 4th 2008 2:12PM
I've flip-flopped over the years on plasma, but then really changed my mind with the reviews on the Kuro line. I need (well... want) to replace my 4 year old 65" Mitsu CRT-based rear-pro behemoth. I'm running out of 60"+ viewing options that offer quality pictures IMO. Yes there's the Sony 60A3000 SXRD but we already know Sony's pulled the plug on manufacturing those as well. I'm not a huge fan of LCD, but like Sony's Bravia line. Yet again I'm not aware of too many AFFORDABLE LCDs in a 60"+ size. Is the next choice a Panny plasma???
Carl @ Mar 4th 2008 4:07PM
Goodnight sweet prince.
Josh @ Mar 6th 2008 10:09AM
We called the Pioneer store (only one in US...by the way) here in California and we confirmed that Pioneer may cease ALL PDP production. At least if the king shall die, it will go to a very worthy... Panasonic. I own the 700 panel in the 50" size, if they improve on the 700/750 displays, it won't be long until they better the Kuro..maybe.
HDpurist @ Mar 5th 2008 11:27PM
The best HDTV will be the Pioneer 8G sets currently out now (or nearly sold out everywhere) and atleast for the rest of this year. The new 2008 Panasonics are improved over the 2007 models, but are still inferior to the 2007 Kuro. 9G Pioneers will be downgraded in build quality using Panasonic parts (like the glass) to make them cheaper to sell.
