Format war rages inside Harry Potter box set
We surely hope you didn't expect Warner Bros. to extinguish any of those tempestuous format war fires. Au contraire, the studio is apparently on a mission to fan those very flames, as it has inadvertently included an HD DVD within a five-disc Blu-ray box set. You read right -- a bevy of users across the 'net have received their limited edition package only to find the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire disc to be of the HD DVD variety. 'Course, we did hear that Warner was gunning for 2008 to unleash Total HD, but we definitely didn't see this coming. All joshing aside, users are apparently being asked to send the entire package back and await a totally Blu replacement, but we've all ideas that solution won't make diehard BD fans happy at all.

The sneak attack method
HD DVD needed to do something to sell their version
LOLOLOLOLO
evilkoala @ Dec 12th 2007 8:38PM
Warner going HD DVD confirmed :P.
I'm surprised they don't just have a single disc replacement program. why would you need to send in the whole package for just one disc?
bdfe @ Dec 12th 2007 8:44PM
will count those as units sold for HDDVDs
Spit on them first
george @ Dec 12th 2007 8:47PM
ha ha ha ha ha
DW @ Dec 12th 2007 8:57PM
It's a Freudian Slip on Warner's part. Or maybe they're dropping a hint to all the Bluray guys trying to tell them something. Either way.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HD4ME @ Dec 12th 2007 9:35PM
Proof that Warner is going HD DVD exclusive!!
RockinOscar @ Dec 12th 2007 9:54PM
i couldn't help it... i laughed. one could say warner is going HD DVD exclusive, and another could say that Warner was going Blu-Ray exclusive and it's giving away the HD DVDs they can't sell... meh
Ron @ Dec 12th 2007 10:14PM
This is not an error, it is the 5th disc "coffee coaster" stated on the box!
:)
Evan @ Dec 12th 2007 10:20PM
I don't know, usually coasters come in sets of four. Looks like you got one real disc in the bunch :-)
T-bone @ Dec 13th 2007 9:48AM
sounds like they got what they expected. 5 discs = 5 coasters. Come on, does anyone over 15 really like these movies. If so, you should have your head examined.
Dave @ Dec 12th 2007 10:32PM
this is probably the single-handedly stupidest thing i have ever seen in a retail release, this is like the equivalent of releasing a betamax set with one vhs attached as a bonus. Fuc*ing retarded...
HDpurist @ Dec 12th 2007 10:43PM
This shows that Warner couldn't give a crap about HD-DVD. This is their way of getting rid of all their HD-DVD stock while they can. That is, while HD-DVD is still alive and available...but imagine how many other purchasers of the BD boxset that got the HD-DVD inside and don't return it considering early purchases are from people who support both formats.
EEL @ Dec 12th 2007 11:30PM
@ HDpurist
Nfinity is right. Save us the FUDing drama. This isn't a Red or Blu issue.
It's just plain funny!!!
TrentD @ Dec 13th 2007 11:00AM
Please don't tell me you're serious. You Blu-trolls will grasp at anything.
HDpurist @ Dec 12th 2007 10:59PM
WB, which currently markets its home video via both formats, could be leaning towards Blu-ray, a BusinessWeek piece says.

Nfinity @ Dec 12th 2007 11:20PM
hey HDpurist.. how about you stop posting FUD PLEEEEEASE.. wake up foooooooo.. wake up :)
"Warner Home Video said it has no intention to support Blu-ray exclusively and cease to release movies on HD DVD format. The comment comes as a denial to rumours spread by the members of Blu-ray camp which says that Warner would shortly proclaim exclusive support for Blu-ray disc."

HAHHAHAHAHAH!!!
Fargus @ Dec 13th 2007 11:50AM
insert stupid fanboy comment from either side here....
zargon @ Dec 13th 2007 12:22AM
Wow, instead of "oh man, that sucks that people bought the BD version and accidently got a disc or two that was HD-DVD."
It is instead the same old bullcrap from the Blu-ray trolls, "HD-DVD is dead", "it is the only way they can sell the HD-DVD version", so on and so forth.
Simply pathetic, but I really guess I have come to expect nothing less from these Blu-ray trolls from that cesspool known as Blu-ray.com spewing their same old and tired comments and FUD.
I hope that anyone who got the wrong version can easily and painlessly get it replaced.
HD4ME @ Dec 13th 2007 1:17AM
Imagine the squeals of delight on Christmas morn, when the tech savy young teenage kid opens his/her BR HP box and finds he/she got HD DVD instead of blu ray.
WOW, thanks Mom and Dad, instead of watching this in Billy's bedroom on the PS3 and 20" TV, I can stay out here with you guys and watch it on a 50" HDTV, AND I can use all the cool online features via the HD DVD player and we can have some real family fun, THANKS.
:)
Nfinity @ Dec 13th 2007 1:43AM
Oh my god guys, you should see how Bourne Ultimatum is selling out.. at my local Walmart they say they couldn't stack them fast enough as they flew off the shelves. The HD DVD version.
HD DVD is going to MASSACRE the Blu-Ray this week.. I feel it.
HD4ME @ Dec 13th 2007 2:41AM
Shame they don't count Walmart.
Just shows how stupid the Nielsens results are.It should count very disc sold at every retail outlet, including all free give aways from both sides, then you would get an accurate result.
BR would still be winning IMO (unfortunately), but the real numbers are how much is each studio wholesaling on a weekly basis, not just how many do Nielsens count.
Mike @ Dec 13th 2007 1:44AM
I bet warner had problems producing all the blue ray discs but didn't want to empty shelf space so thru in an HD DVD disc so could ship product
Mike @ Dec 13th 2007 1:47AM
I bought all 3 for $49 with Amazon.
mike @ Dec 13th 2007 1:50AM
why are people getting upset? This is a bonus. Those blu ray purchasers are lucky they got a better version of the movie (hd-dvd releases always look better then blu).
On a serious note now, What about the legions of idiots who buy this and dont know what hd-dvd is (ps3 blu ray owners) and when it does not play, cannot figure out why?
TrentD @ Dec 13th 2007 11:13AM
As an HD DVD fan, I have to call BS here - Warner's releases use the same transfer for Blu-ray and HD DVD. It's impossible for one to look better than the other. Stop stooping to the level of the Blu-ray trolls that hang out here.
andy @ Dec 13th 2007 9:21AM
Well, it looks like at least one replication facility has invested in both formats :D
I used to work in one of those places, and I can see how this happens. The raw discs come to assembly on spindles from the clean room. You stack each disc in a case. Each case is then places in a box set by another assembly station.
Assembly probably had one line doing BRD and one line doing HDDVD on the same day, and one spindle got mixed. I'll bet this doesn't affect every BRD set.
Andrew @ Dec 14th 2007 7:27AM
Umm I'd have to say it was some huge messup by some guy in the warehouse who was either drunk or on his last day... this isn't them trying to unload their HD-DVD's or get rid of their Blu-Rays
Eddie @ Dec 14th 2007 11:50AM
I'm just waiting for the one dude with a combo player to report his BluRay HP disc set came with IME and online functions, and how much BluRay will now proceed to pwn HD.
