Oppo DV-981HD 1080p DVD player reviewed
If you've got a 1080p HDTV, haven't already jumped on the HD DVD or Blu-ray bandwagon -- or maybe you only own the as yet non-upconverting PlayStation 3 -- and need a good DVD player look no further. Techdigs took a look at Oppo's just released $229 DV-981HD DVD player and decided it's hit the price/performance sweet spot perfectly. We feel the need to mention that Oppo includes the HDMI cable with its high def player (seriously Sony, we're not going to let you off the hook for that), and analog 5.1 audio outputs (don't think we forgot about you Toshiba). Overall the reviewer found the speedy menus, good performance on Silicon Optix's HQV tests courtesy of the included Faroudja scaler and easy-to-use remote. Of course, this player isn't for everyone, most HDTV owners are probably just fine with the older OPDV971H or OPDV970HD depending on setup, but if you want to watch DVDs at 1080p, this is probably the player for you.

Makes more sense to put that $229 towards a HTPC and you can scale and/or convert to your hearts content, and even use vga. What's better at D/A conversion - a computer graphics card that was designed for that purpose, or a consumer grade HDTV using HDMI? That's a no brainer.

Oppo is one of the best brands w/ great quality technology. I own many of their products for quite some time and they do wonders. Their dvd players not only do so much, (play divx,mp3,wma,.srt the list is endless) but they provide high quality images in addition to smooth control feel all b/c of the DCDi by Faroudja (chip). They also have great services, I noticed a few bugs and told the oppo.service and they fixed it in their next firmware update. Oppo actually originated from taiwan(www.oppo.com) and they have a branch in CA (www.oppodigital.com). This is probably one of the best dvd players out there(that plays almost anything you throw at it), but its no blu-ray or HD-DVD.
if ur looking for a dvd player though(upconverts to 1080p), this is one of the hottest dvd players out there(the ratings don't lie, benchmark #1!!!) buy one now at www.oppodigital.com
