HDBeat Podcast 005 - 03.17.06
Since Ben and Kevin were too busy drinking on St. Patrick's Day to do the podcast in a Irish Pub, the show came on a Sunday. Plenty of news, both good and bad, on the HD-DVD front as well as the big Sony Playstation 3 Get the podcast

Just about crapped myself when you mentioned the 60" SXRD at Sears for $3k since I just got mine for over a grand more than that. Thanks goodness, my check showed you weren't looking at the SXRD.
Kevin C. Tofel @ Mar 19th 2006 8:16PM
Sorry James. After a closer look, I realized it was the Sony LCD, not the SXRD. That's what I get for multitasking.

Even at a between $4k and $5k, I highly recommend it. The SXRD has changed my life -- it's that wonderful. Buy it!

A few things from the show...
You mentioned cable boxes must have HDMI. As of now, this isnt the case. I work at a small cable company (small compared to Comcast) and we do offer HD boxes with DVI (w/ DCP) output.
Also, I wanted to mention that I too have had a few universal remotes that might have been able to control all my devices, but weren't worth the trouble. I must say the the Logitech Harmony 880 is working great for me. The web based interface for programming isnt as quick as I think it should be, but I am finally able to control all my devices with one remote.
Thanks for the great site and great show.

Ben - you may have already checked this out, but Lathe is a great program for getting video to portable devices (PocketPCs, Palm, iPod, etc.). I looked into their support of DVR-MS and based on the link below to their forum, they plan to add it.

It does cost $8, but worth the price to play with it. I use it to get video quickly and easily to my PocketPc 2002 and it works great. Here is the link to purchase it:

By the way in the meantime it looks like this is a good first step and then use Lathe to get to your iPod.

Joshua,
I looked at those, I have been using DVRMSTOOLbox but it doesn't convert to iPod.
I suppose I could look at a 2 step approch but I realy was hoping for a one step, because of time and disk space.

Hey Guys,
You mentioned that you were curious about any good codec comparisons. Doom9 does a pretty good job. This one in particular compares Divx 6.1, x264 rev 387, Xvid 1.1, and Ateme High Profile Encoder core 1.4.0.3.
